We conducted a macro-review of core engineering salaries at a functional level compiled from various sources, covering:

  • Domains: Including, but not restricted to Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, Civil, Biotechnology, and Aerospace-Aeronautical Engineering.
  • Industry Segments: Major sectors like Manufacturing, Heavy Engineering, Defence, Chemical and Pharma, Automotive, Infrastructure, and Transportation.
  • Locations: Major industrial centres across India.

The following sections will provide a rough snapshot of the median salary ranges across various experience levels

Junior-Level Roles (0-2 years)

Fresh graduates and engineers with up to 2 years of experience typically earn between INR 3 to 6 lakhs per annum. This range is consistent across various engineering fields, reflecting entry-level opportunities in diverse industries.

 Mid-Level Roles (3-7 years)

Engineers with 3 to 7 years of experience can expect their earnings to increase significantly, with median salaries ranging from INR 6 to 12 lakhs per annum. As professionals take on more responsibility and hone their expertise, their compensation grows accordingly.

 Mid-Senior-Level Roles (8-12 years)

Senior engineers with over 8 years of experience, particularly those in early leadership or specialized roles, command salaries in the range of INR 12 to 25 lakhs per annum. This reflects the high value of advanced expertise and strategic contributions in key engineering sectors.

Senior Level Roles (12+ years)

The salary range is significantly higher for senior engineers with over 12 years of experience, particularly those in leadership, specialized, or managerial roles heading entire functions or departments at a national level. The ranges of salaries here can be wide, from INR 30-40 lakhs to over INR I crore, depending on the industry, role, and seniority.

Kush Bhargava, Managing Partner of the leading Search, selection & coaching firm Nibhandana Human Resources & Consulting LLP, notes, “These estimates showcase the potential across various roles and responsibilities. Professionals should view these ranges as stepping stones for career advancement. In fact, at higher levels, these figures are conservative, with much greater salary and reward opportunities available in cutting-edge industries, for those with the right talent.”

This insight underscores the vast opportunities for growth and advancement in core engineering roles, as engineers progress through their careers in India’s fast-growing economy.
